DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing FAQs

Does DOT drug test check for alcohol?

Yes. We offer tests that check for alcohol as well as 5-panel tests for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, and phencyclidine (PCP). DOT alcohol tests can detect blood alcohol levels of 0.02 and greater. You will get results for all tests on the same day the test was conducted.

What is a shy bladder in DOT drug testing?

When an employee cannot produce a urine sample within 3 hours of the first attempt, they may be experiencing “shy bladder”. DOT testing requires close supervision while producing a sample, which can cause the employee to be unable to urinate. In this situation, the employee has 5 days to get an evaluation from a physician. The medical review officer (MRO) will decide whether the test is considered a refusal or is considered cancelled.

How much urine is needed for a DOT drug test?

DOT regulations state that a total of 45 mL of urine must be collected and split between two containers: one 30 mL container and one 15 mL container. All DOT urine sample collections must be performed this way, otherwise it won’t be compliant.

What types of DOT tests must I conduct?

The DOT tests you need will depend on which regulations you have to follow. Most companies that fall under DOT regulations need to conduct 5-Panel tests and random screens. To check if your company is covered under DOT regulations, use this tool: Am I Covered?
