Monday, Colorado’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of Dish Network, establishing a precedent for other courts as they decide similar cases across the country. The decision holds that an employer can legally terminate an employee who tests positive for marijuana – even if the state has legalized the substance medically and recreationally.

Although this case was ruled in favor of the employer, the legal cannabis debate is still far from over. In the next legislative session, expect bills in your state to further define “lawful activity” to accommodate medical users.
