Drugged driving is on the rise- 05 May

A new study released this past month in April found that drug use was present in 43% of fatal car crashes, which now surpasses the number of fatalities where alcohol was present.

Drug use and drug use by drivers is on the rise. With record numbers of people dying from drug overdoses and this new study by the GHSA (Governor’s Highway Safety Association) showing the increase in driving dangers, there is cause to be concerned.

There has been a call for increased training among law enforcement for drug detection. But because there is no standard roadside test to detect most drugs, officers can only be trained to recognize common signs.

Mary Gaston, a Washington state resident, suffered the loss of her 23-year-old son, Blake, when he was killed in a crash two years ago after his motorcycle was hit by a driver who was under the influence of marijuana.

“I can still hear the impact,” she said. “There’s a perception that marijuana does not impair you like alcohol does. That you can smoke a couple joints, eat a couple of brownies and go out and drive. That’s not true, you are impaired.”

Don’t contribute to the drugged driving problem, help prevent it. Hold routine drug testing to help prevent DUID problems.
